At an Indian village where our ministry had provided a new church and a water well, I preached the sermon at the church’s dedication. After the service, we had a time of prayer.
A mother had brought her son who could not talk, tore his clothes and the house and cursed at his mother. I detected a demonic entity. I started by praying for him, but a stronger intervention felt necessary. I held the boy tightly against my chest to control him. God’s Spirit burned the demon from the boy.
The last verse of scripture my mother shared with me 20 years ago was Jeremiah 29:11. Wonderful verse:
Here’s what YHWH says to you: “I know all about the marvelous destiny I have in store for you, a future planned out in detail. My intention is not to harm you but to surround you with peace and prosperity and to give you a beautiful future, glistening with hope.”
Jeremiah 29:11 The Passion Translation
Oh, to tap into His destiny for your life!
Adults often tell young people they can achieve anything if they set their minds to it. It would be far wiser to say, “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for you. Seek Him and walk out His path for you.”
My plan was in place. My ambition was to be a famous artist, so I dedicated myself to my artistic gift. However, my encounter with Christ significantly altered my heart.
Right after I made Jesus my Lord, I felt the desire in my heart to become a minister. A quizzical expression crossed my college teammate’s face; the one who had

Oh, what a different young man! Now, he smiled and spoke to his mother calmly. Her son was back!
led me to Christ seemed to question my worthiness. But in his kindness, Rick set up a meeting for him and me to talk with our church pastor. The veteran minister shared his wisdom and described the life and work of a pastor. What moved me most was the realization that only God can call someone to ministry.
I completed my degree to become a secondary art teacher, but the “call” kept beckoning. Upon graduation, I left California, moved to Oklahoma, and enrolled in Rhema Bible Training Center, an excellent decision. That grounding in the Word of God cemented my faith in Christ, but more importantly, it solidified my call to the ministry.
At 27, I pastored my first church in a small rural town in Arkansas. Five years later, I took my first ministry trip overseas to Lagos, Nigeria. I fell in love with the people God allowed me to minister to.
I’ve spent nearly 25 years in pastoral ministry and undertaken 70 mission trips, ten of which were to India. My ministry experience includes full-time pastoral roles with staff and part-time ministry at smaller churches. I have worked across 5 continents and ministered in many churches throughout the US.

After a substantial evangelistic event, friends in ministry founded a church. As my friend preached, this precious little girl sat quietly in her mother’s lap. But all during the sermon, the mother would touch her daughter’s ears and then make a pleading gesture towards me. I understood. She wanted her baby to be able to hear. As soon as the friend stopped preaching, he invited the ministers to go to the people to pray for them. Instantly, I went to this mother and child. I put my fingers in her ears and commanded, ‘In Jesus’ Name, Be opened!” The girl was turned around to face her mother. I told her mom, you tell me if she can hear. I snapped on one side of the girl’s head, then the other. The girl’s head would twitch in whichever direction I snapped. But you could tell from the mother’s face. She glowed in gratitude — her child could hear. God did this!
No matter where or what the Lord has brought, one central desire compels me: that all might know my precious Heavenly Father. Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection alone make this possible.
God once spoke to me during a specific period in my life. He said, “I am altering the course of events of your life because of the urgency of the times.” That word resonated with my life then; I’ve seen its truth many times. I believe it also has a broad implication for this generation.
My passion for global missions was ignited in Bible school. I envisioned my older self doing this. My thirties and forties were when I did my traveling. High school art teaching was my plan following college. Of my eighteen years of teaching, twelve were spent teaching high school art. But I was rocking a white beard while teaching!
The greatest urgency in my life is to help believers in Christ become free to find their call and fulfill who they are: the light of the world. My first book, Faith For Souls, is finally out! A second will soon follow. I intend to do audio versions followed by a weekly podcast.
Jesus is coming back soon, but God is waiting for a reason. He wants to reunite with all his children.
Contrary to man’s perspective, the Lord is not late with his promise to return, as some measure lateness. But rather, his ‘delay’ simply reveals his loving patience toward you, because he does not want any to perish but all to come to repentance” (see 2 Peter 3:9)

my senior year of high school. ‘So serious!’
I have known I was gifted as an artist since childhood. During music appreciation in the 3rd grade, I would sketch portraits of those bearded composers. My teacher noticed my talent and said something to my mother. My mom then enrolled me in a Montessori summer class with high school students. Thank God for observant teachers!
I took every art course from middle school through a degree in Art Education. I love drawing portraits, genres with people, scenes of life, various mediums, and ‘big art’ that tells a story. My family made many trips to ‘the City’ (San Francisco). I still vividly remember watching a street artist doing portraits in charcoal. His style impacted my own.
Influence of the Masters
One of the masters’ artworks I have been enthralled with all my life was Peter Paul Rubens’s Elevation of the Cross.
He painted during the Baroque period. This painting is the center of a triptych (3 images forming a larger composition). Ten figures are in a swirling composition with strong darks and lights. The vibrant color is dramatic. But what captures me most is the face of Christ. As the rough burley soldiers lift the cross,

This mural is a commissioned original design painted in acrylic. Before I even picked up a brush, I hit my knees, praying for God’s hand to do this piece! I will never forget the response from the restaurant owner as she took in my composition. She said, ‘This is not a man planning to dive into the Laguna Azul (Blue Lagoon). This is Jesus observing His creations.’
Jesus looks up (into the heavens) as if He knows why he is there! I am struck to the core every time I see this artwork.
My first street chalk art was a painting by Rubens — a big task in pastel on the pavement!
As a California public high school art teacher, I used this painting on the first day of school, for each class period every year, to begin my course. This art allowed me to express to 175 students yearly that I was enthralled with the face of Christ on the cross — as if He knew why He was there. From day one, I was preaching the Gospel in a California public high school. Do not be intimidated to be a Christian.
Art Which Lifts The Soul
I love storytelling, dramatic light and color, and complex perspectives. You’re welcome into my set. For me, art has to express the preciousness of life. Art should lift the soul — both the observer’s and my own. Art should be an event you do not want to leave.
I love my work and appreciate the opportunity to create with brush, charcoal, clay, and more. My aim is for the viewer to experience that same joy.
